Story

As a counselor, Joanna values empathy, acceptance, and creating a safe place to listen to and understand her client’s stories. Joanna likes to think of herself as a “corporate brat,” as she grew up moving all over the country, from Texas to Michigan, to California, and lots of other places in between. She even attended four high schools in four years. Because of the constant transition, Joanna quickly learned to blend in to accommodate other people’s emotions, but she also developed the skills and sensitivity that make her passionate about working in the helping professions.

Joanna’s faith has always been an important part of her healing journey. She became a Christian in college and found that this helped her find hope and peace. She experienced counseling for the first time in her twenties, and she knows how challenging it can be to reclaim your own story and process a complex array of emotions. This experience set her on a journey of healing and ignited her interest in helping other people do the same.

She started a family shortly after graduating college and put her helping skills to work raising three kids with learning disabilities. She used her sensitivity and gift for listening to others as a mother. She rejoined the workforce in 2020 in a medical office, but soon decided to pursue her long-held dream of working as a counselor.

She is passionate about listening to other people’s stories, and helping them as they learn more about themselves, process their emotions and trauma, and learn how to live a life aligned with their values. She is passionate about helping people navigate issues around life transitions, marriage, parenting, loss, and spiritual questions.

In her free time, Joanna enjoys drinking coffee with friends, watching movies with her family, going for hikes, and doing creative work like knitting and needlepoint.
